The Escrima style of martial art is unique in that it teaches weapons first. This is unique in the martial arts since most schools and styles teach empty hand first and then weapons training. Escrima does it a little different with weapons training first and then once the weapons part is learned then they advanced into the empty hand portion of the art. There are even schools who prefer their students to start with two sticks or a stick and a wooden knife called espada y daga, Spanish for "sword and dagger". In Escrima the weapon is nothing more than an extension of the body. So if you were to lose your weapon you would still perform the same movements and techniques, just without the weapon in your hand. Perhaps the most common stick used for training in Escrima is the rattan stick. Usually it is about the length of your arm. Of course there are always exceptions, certain schools prefer the stick to be a certain length. Did you know there are other terms associated with the art of Escrima. They are - Kali, Arnis de Mano, and the abbreviation FMA (Filipino Martial Arts) has also been used to describe this ancient martial art. ©,
